MSI GS65 Stealth 9SE 2019 Gaming Laptop First Impressions Review

Posted on June 17, 2019 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews Leave a comment

I was trying to decide between this, the Asus Zephyrus M, and the new Razer Blade 15 Advance. After going back and forth, I decided to try out the MSI GS65 and I think this trial phase is on its way to being permanent.

I am a long time Mac user and my current laptop is a MacBook Pro 13 2018 and I game on a PS4 and an Xbox One X. Wanted to get back to the PC Master Race and I wanted the flexibility to play at home, in between offices while I’m on the road as well as have a great dedicated PC that will run my Windows applications for work. I’ve been using Parallels for years, while it does work… it’s just not the same.

Out of the box, the GS65 has decent build quality with its aluminum casing compared to most PC laptops you see at Best Buy but this is nowhere near the level of quality of a Mac and even a Razer. The GS65 doesn’t feel as solid and I would have expected a little more after shelling out $2000 for this thing. I really appreciate the engineering of the Mac and Razer on how they were able to build something so thin, yet extremely solid. The build of the MSI screen was disappointingly flimsy and I feel that I could one day break this thing if I opened the screen the wrong way, especially with one hand.

Performance however is where this laptop really shines. I have thrown every game I had at High to Ultra settings and it handles them with ease. Crysis 3 (yeah it’s a 2013 game) was at Ultra and it looked amazing. Overwatch was at Ultra and the frame rates just flew and the same with Apex Legends. The GS65 also handled Shadow of Tombraider like a champ. I played through Tombraider on the Xbox One X and I had to sacrifice frame rates for quality and that just wasn’t the experience I wanted for such a visually stunning game. On the GS65, Tombraider was absolutely beautiful and it easily maintained a 60 fps frame rate without issues. Sure the fans were blowing but that is to be expected from a thin and light gaming laptop. Oh did I mention that this thing is only a little over 4lbs?

As a productivity device it’s fantastic. The majority of my work day revolves around Google Chrome and Microsoft Office and this thing handles it like a champ. I go from home to office, to other offices, and airport to airport. The weight makes this less a burden to carry. However, if you are planning to use this as only for work, it’s going to be overkill so you might want to look elsewhere.

Other things to note:

  • The speakers were loud but bass is weak.
  • Battery life at Battery Saver or Better Battery setting will get you through 4-6 hours for work applications such as MS Office
  • The trackpad is much better than last years, but it’s no MacBook or Razer
  • This has a generous amount of ports, 3 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, Audio, Mini Display, Thunderbolt
  • Wish it had one more thunderbolt port instead of that mini display port
  • NO USB-C Charging
  • Inverted motherboard makes upgrading a pain, seriously MSI what were you thinking?
  • keyboard is a breath of fresh air coming from the stupid butterfly switches of the Mac.
  • 240hz screen is fantastic
  • Bluetooth range is weak if you use wireless headphones. Don’t expect to walk more than 12 feet away from your laptop
  • Undervolt. You don’t have to, but it will make your life a lot better. If you don’t know how watch YouTube videos on how to do it!

      •  CPU
        • Single Core: 5218
        • Multi Core: 24821
      • Open GL: 208027
    • Cinebench R20: 2467
    • 3DMark
      • Time Spy: 5658
      • Fire Strike: 13318
      • Sky Diver: 32217

Overall I think this is a better buy dollar for dollar if you want to compare similar specs to the Razer, you save about $400-$500. The performance alone on this for the size and weight is a huge selling point for this. My only ask is that they step up the build quality a few more notches on this will be an easy winner.

Overall Rating: 4.5/5

Posted on April 6, 2016 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life 1 Comment

Been busy with work but I finally did get around to putting together a video on my first few Phantom 3 Pro drone flights (after the one I did last week). Also follow me along on a train ride from Pasadena to Hollywood to the Pantages Theatre. More videos coming along the way, thanks for watching!

It’s Caturday!

Posted on August 23, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News 1 Comment

It’s been a long week and I am thankful for this weekend. Been busy with work and every time I want to go do a major article, something else comes up. There was one night where I couldn’t sleep so I created a website for my cat Lily at www.lilythecat.com hoping to promote my cat since we have so many photos of her. I can’t believe how easy it is to put up a website these days especially with Tumblr and WordPress. Way back in my day, we had to use Geocities or some other domain host and the quality was horrible! Anyway, off to enjoy the weekend!

Geek’s Workspace Evolution / U Board Monitor Stand Review

Posted on August 7, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, Reviews 2 Comments

I picked up a U Board Smart Monitor Stand from Amazon earlier this week to help organize my current workspace. My desk setup has changed quite a bit over the years and I think it has a lot to do with the design of the Mac. No, I’m not saying that to be an Apple Fanboy but there is something so elegant about a minimalistic setup and it makes a lot of sense having less clutter on your workspace. You know the phrase “less is more?” It’s exactly that.

Let’s take a look at my previous setups…

Workspace at Work

So after over a one month hiatus from this site, I’m slowing trying to get back in the groove of things. I’ve been traveling quite a bit from work, plus the holidays, New Year’s, etc I had no time to do anything with this site.

The workspace above is my actual office at work. It has stayed the same like this for over six years. Empty walls, nothing really personal about my desk. Frankly I don’t really care. My philosophy behind this in the beginning was that I do not want to get too comfortable and situated because I will be getting promoted or even move on to greater things outside of the company. It may sound a little bit arrogant but if I did personalize my desk at work, etc… then I will feel like I have made my home in the same position. All I have on my desk are my work computer (UGH), desk phone and my Macbook Air to do things that the Lenovo work laptop can’t do, which is a lot of things.

Anyway good news is that I’ve been promoted 4 times already at this job for. The irony is that I’ve stayed at the same desk!

Quick Review – Sony SBH52 Smart Bluetooth Handset

The Smart Watch Alternative

I was in the researching the Smartwatch to go with my Xperia Z1 and I stumbled across this on Sony’s website. They had this really great commercial that showed the versatility of the device such and one of the features that caught my attention was that you can hold it to yourr ear and talk through it as if it was a “mini phone.”

So like an impulsive fool, I went and found one on eBay for $99 which was a great price since other sites sold this for $129 and higher! Was this impulsive buy worth it? Or is this another piece of redundant technology? Let’s find out!

Geek Life June to September 2013

Posted on October 6, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life 3 Comments

I haven’t logged onto this site in months! With a combination of just getting married, promoted at work, and playing with a lot of new gear within the past 90 days, my schedule has been pretty full! This is just one of those rare Sundays where I can finally sit down and write about whatever I want to. I hope I get more days like this!

On a hot summer day, the beach is one of the top two places for me to go. The other option is to stay indoors and watch anime 😉 Continue reading→

Patio Workspace!

Posted on July 25, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Workspaces 1 Comment

Patio Workspace

Sometimes, the day is too nice to be indoors so I bring out the 13-inch MacBook Retina and work outside! Sure it’s no comparison to the 27-inch iMac I have in the office but it’s always good to get some fresh air every now and then. If I wanted to, I could just do most of my work off the Samsung Galaxy S4 and throw my feet on the table, but since these are work hours, I have to be a little bit more work conscious even if this is at home!
