iPhone 6 Plus Review

Posted on November 9, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 2 Comments

iPhone 6 Plus Review 1

Not too long ago, I concluded that the iPhone 6 was the “perfect iPhone” because it had just about everything an iPhone user ever wanted from having an upgraded screen, improved camera, OS enhancements, etc which made something already great, better. Factor in the larger screen without the sacrifice of one handed use and you have a winner. But what if you wanted more? What if a 4.7-inch display just wasn’t enough for you? And what if you wanted to have the piece of mind of Optical Image Stabilization on your smartphone camera even though the iPhone 6 does a great job at taking photos already? Well, for a $100 more and the sacrifice of some of your pocket’s real estate, this is where the iPhone 6 Plus comes in.

iPhone 6 Review

The Perfect iPhone?

There has been a demand for a bigger iPhone ever since there were bigger smartphones. Apple stuck with their 3.5-inch screens from the very first iPhone in 2007 all the way to the iPhone 4S in 2011.

It was not till the debut of the iPhone 5 in 2012 where they finally increased the screen size to a measly 4-inch, a time where the Samsung Galaxy, Google Nexus, HTC One, etc have been readily available as alternatives for people who demanded a larger screen. While Apple held on to the “familiar” design, shape, and size of their iPhones, they have lost quite a bit of the marketshare with their Android and Windows alternatives.
You see, over the years people have become very dependent on their smartphones to manage their work, personal, and social lives without having to tethered to a desktop, laptop or even a tablet nowadays. The bigger screens are pretty much a requirement for most people and a 4-inch iPhone just can’t seem to cut it. Just try watching anime when reading subtitles while on the treadmill at the gym. It’s pretty painful and I know this because I did it just about every day with my iPhone 5S!
This year, with the debut of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, things are a little different. With the release of the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhones, this changes everything… or does it?

Sony Xperia Z2 Review

Sony’s Xperia flagship phones usually have the most up to date hardware and best designs, and the Xperia Z1 offered excellent performance and a stylish look. Unfortunately the camera on the Z1 fell short against other smartphones, and the TFT TRILUMINOS display looked washed out at the wrong angles.

The Sony Xperia Z2 shipped about six months after the Z1 launch, complete with identical camera hardware and slight improvements under the hood. The Z2 screen is also bigger, and it sports an IPS display, along with the latest Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM.

Will the Sony Xperia Z2 disappoint like the Z1? Let’s find out.

A contender for the best smartphone?

After reviewing the Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 I didn’t think there would be a phone that could top that, until the Sony Xperia Z1 caught my attention. You see, deep down inside I am always looking for the best of the best and in my mind, the Note 3 is the king of all smartphones at the moment. Seeing the specs of the Xperia Z1 in being powered by the same Snapdragon 800 processor on the Note 3, having a much more premium quality build, an Exmor RS 20-MegaPixel camera, and being water resistant of all that, this has just about everything going for it. Will this dethrone the Galaxy Note 3? Let’s find out!  Continue reading→

Droid!

It’s been crazy over the past few months and I worked on quite a handful of reviews. In doing that, I’ve rotated through some notebooks, smartphones and other gadgets going from an iPhone 5, to a Note 2, back to an iPhone 5 and now I am rockin’ an HTC One 64GB Developer Edition! I’ve also gone through some notebooks and tablets too such as going from an iPad Mini to a Microsoft Surface Pro, an Asus Transformer, Razer Edge Gaming Tablet to a Retina iPad, and now I am back to the iPad Mini once again. And on the notebook side, I went from my MacBook Air 11″ to a Dell XPS 12 and now I’m loving the MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display! I like to play around with the latest and greatest and I probably have an addiction where I will never be satisfied with what I currently have. At this very moment, my trio of the MacBook Pro 13″ Retina, iPad Mini LTE, and my new HTC One will do for now. I still plan to keep the iPhone 5 because as my backup and “in-between” phones to use while I look for something better! Again, lots of tech and lots of food within these two months! PT Smartcase for Note II

I don’t get the chance to post as often as I want to these days but I do update my Flickr and Instagram pretty frequently so you can see a lot of my food porn on both of them. If you haven’t noticed already I’ve switched from using the iPhone 5 and am now proudly sporting a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 which better suits my needs because of the customization, larger screen, and expandable capabilities. Although the iPhone 5 is a nice phone, I like most people have gotten bored of it and tired of Apple’s restrictions on how I can use my phone. I love the fact that I can load as many songs and videos I want in several different formats and it’s great that I can pop in a 32GB MicroSD card and not worry about space. I like it so much that I’ve pretty much broken free of the Apple eco-system and eliminated the need for having an iPad Mini because it was redundant having both. The Note 2 is good enough to cover both the phone and the tablet for my uses. The eco-system thing is all hype anyway. I have no issues surviving without iMessage which can easily be substituted with apps like LINE or Facebook Chat. The people who matter to me have them already and if they don’t, they like me enough to install them! PhotoStream was an annoyance and uploading photos to Dropbox is a better solution. I could go on and on but people who gave Android a chance and love it have already said the same things over and over.

This session of Geek Life covers the usual food, tech, and I also went to Mardis Gras in New Orleans as well as take a cruise to the West Caribbean! Don’t worry, I wasn’t stranded on that Carnival Cruise! Continue reading→

Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3

Posted on October 12, 2012 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 4 Comments

The iPhone 5’s build quality is not too different from that of its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, aside from being thinner, lighter and longer. it still sports a beautiful design solid design, as it is made of aluminum with a gorgeous glass screen.

Quite a handful of people might not like the “cheap, plastic feel” of the Galaxy S III but it is actually made of premium materials — a very thin but sturdy polycarbonate. As a result, the body is much more flexible than the iPhone 5. Also, the S III uses very solid Gorilla Glass 2 for its screen.
