Macbook 2016 Review

In this video we are going to talk about the 2016 Retina MacBook. It hasn’t been too long since I did a review on the 2015 retina MacBook and truthfully, not much has changed. That’s not at all a bad thing as it’s still one of my favorite devices to use while traveling or working mobile.

MacBook 2015 Review

For awhile, we’ve been waiting for a MacBook Air with a Retina Display so we could have the perfect traveling laptop. The MacBook Air itself is already a great device boasting really good overall performance, unmatched battery life, and a really good size for those who need something thin and light. It is still by far one of the best notebooks for the general consumer. The only problem with the Macbook Air is that the screen resolution of 1440 x 900 (on the 13 inch) seems really outdated with all retina displays that have been out for quite some time.

Waterfield Designs Staad Backpack Review

Posted on August 23, 2015 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, Reviews, Workspaces 3 Comments

I have a handful of bags and have been rotating between the Hard Case by Waterfield Designs and a 15-inch Thule Stravan Case. The thing is that I don’t carry around my 15-inch Retina Macbook Pro that much anymore ever since I got the 12-inch Macbook Retina so those two bags, although they do an excellent job regardless, are a little too big.
Carrying around a messenger bag is convenient going from home to office, or mainly anywhere local but for those who need to take their gear global from airport to airport, it can be a pain. So I was in the market for a good quality backpack that:
  1. Could take a beating
  2. Not weigh a ton
  3. Look good
It was a toss-up between Thule’s Crossover Backpack and the Waterfield Staad Backpack. I went with Waterfield because they had the thinner Slim version and I really liked the look of it.

Was up early the other day and wanted to enjoy the Retina display. I usually have this hooked up to a crappy Lenovo monitor.

The Geek’s Mobile Gear 2014

Posted on August 14, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Workspaces Leave a comment

Working in running a region of six sales teams in the telecommunications industry involves lots of travel but at the same time it gives me the opportunity to utilize a lot of mobile tech which is what I love to play with anyway.

I like to say that the world is my office since I work just about everywhere – not just from a desk but from the floor, to a bench, in a car, on a plane, etc… and there’s no way in hell that I’m going to be able to carry my 27-inch iMac with me.  So here’s a look at my ever changing mobile gear – my home away from home! Geek Life March 14th to May 5th

Droid!

It’s been crazy over the past few months and I worked on quite a handful of reviews. In doing that, I’ve rotated through some notebooks, smartphones and other gadgets going from an iPhone 5, to a Note 2, back to an iPhone 5 and now I am rockin’ an HTC One 64GB Developer Edition! I’ve also gone through some notebooks and tablets too such as going from an iPad Mini to a Microsoft Surface Pro, an Asus Transformer, Razer Edge Gaming Tablet to a Retina iPad, and now I am back to the iPad Mini once again. And on the notebook side, I went from my MacBook Air 11″ to a Dell XPS 12 and now I’m loving the MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display! I like to play around with the latest and greatest and I probably have an addiction where I will never be satisfied with what I currently have. At this very moment, my trio of the MacBook Pro 13″ Retina, iPad Mini LTE, and my new HTC One will do for now. I still plan to keep the iPhone 5 because as my backup and “in-between” phones to use while I look for something better! Again, lots of tech and lots of food within these two months! Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch Retina Display Review

Posted on April 3, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 7 Comments

Macbook-Pro-13-inch-Retina

When the first 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina was released in Q4 of 2012, it received a mix response. It was praised for being one of the most beautiful 13-inch notebooks to date with an amazing retina display, however it was highly criticized for being way overpriced starting at $1,699 with only 128GB of storage with no dedicated graphics card. Just recently, Apple did a refresh of their notebooks and the 13-inch MacBook Pro received a slight upgrade in hardware and most surprisingly a $200 reduction in price. Is the 2013 13-inch MacBook Pro now worth it? Let’s find out!

I am sticking with the Note 2 – You can SEE why

Posted on March 26, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Apps, Gadgets, Geek Life 3 Comments

Note 2 vs iPhone 5 Screen

Sure there’s a ton of lengthy articles of why people have switched from iPhone to whatever Android device, I am going to skip that and show you my biggest reason. The Note 2’s screen is awesome. At first I thought it was overkill and silly carrying a device as large as the Note 2, but after getting used to the size of the phablet, going back to an S3 and even an iPhone 5 was almost unbearable. I have to hold the phone close to my face to read it on it! Also the Note 2 eliminated my need of having to carry around an iPad Mini which ironically helps me travel lighter. On the go, all I need is my MacBook Pro 13″ Retina and my Note 2 and I’m all set. No need to carry an extra tablet, charger, and screen cover. And if I need more battery life, I can just carry an extra battery!

Other great selling points on the Note 2 and most Android phones:

  • S-Pen is really handy when needing to jot down notes. There have been many situations where I had to quickly scribble some notes and it does a great job at that
  • Swiftkey is the best keyboard out there period. I love the Swiftkey Flow feature (swype) and how it predicts your typing patters. Great for people who use hashtags with Twitter and Instagram
  • Freedom to play just about any video format. AVI, MKV, MP4, Divx, Etc… Just load it onto the memory card and you’re ready to go. No required software needed
  • Oh yeah – the memory card! Load your music, movies, etc on it up to 64GB!
  • Customization – I can be in control of how my phone works and how the interface is laid out. I can set which default browser, video / music player, document reader I want to use!
  • Apps integrate with the OS. Unlike iOS which is limited to Twitter and Facebook, I can share to just about anything such as Instagram, Flickr, WhatsApp or whatever app I have. It’s really convenient

I still think the iPhone is great. I love the form factor and ease of one handed use, but the Note 2 better suits my needs! Hope Apple impresses with the next iPhone!
