Samsung Galaxy Note 7 – First Impressions Review

Posted on August 20, 2016 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, Reviews 2 Comments

galaxy-note7_curve_phone

My first impressions (less than 24 hours) coming from an iPhone 6S Plus and Nexus 6P before that. These are just my Notes (yes I meant to do that) written so far for an upcoming video / review so I apologize if it looks messy.

  • Design is incredible. Hard to believe that this has a larger screen that the Plus and is physically smaller and lighter
  • Always on Display seemed gimicky at first but it makes great desk clock and I already find it useful
  • Fingerprint scanner is as fast as the iPhone’s but I like the Nexus 6P’s execution better
  • Touch Wiz has been a pretty smooth experience. If you hate the cartoony looking icons, just go to the theme store and download a theme. I am using Material, which was free.
  • I was a little squeamish in shutting off iMessage at first, but there are only two people I really iMessage anyway. Everyone else has WhatsApp, Facebook, and Hangouts. I got over it in 30 minutes.
  • Bloatware on the T-Mobile variant isn’t so bad, but it still sucks. At least you can easily disable it
  • I use both OSX and Windows with Chrome as my main browser. Chrome does an excellent job in integrating the experience (continuity) between your phone and Mac/PC. I have a bunch of tabs open in Chrome on my Mac, and then when I need to take a dump or something, I can just continue off what I’m reading on my phone
  • Notification light: It changes everything.

It’s Caturday!

Posted on August 23, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News 1 Comment

It’s been a long week and I am thankful for this weekend. Been busy with work and every time I want to go do a major article, something else comes up. There was one night where I couldn’t sleep so I created a website for my cat Lily at www.lilythecat.com hoping to promote my cat since we have so many photos of her. I can’t believe how easy it is to put up a website these days especially with Tumblr and WordPress. Way back in my day, we had to use Geocities or some other domain host and the quality was horrible! Anyway, off to enjoy the weekend!

HTC One M8 First Impressions

Posted on April 13, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Photography 1 Comment

My Phones as of 4-14-2014

Added an M8 to my collection. I really need therapy

Just took a few photos so far and the camera overall is pretty good. I wouldn’t say fantastic but not as bad as people would fear. Love the form factor and how fast and responsive the phone is. Button placement is somewhat awkward but I got used to it pretty quick. As some of you have said, that area where the HTC logo is at is a waste of space.

Here are the first photos I have taken with this phone:

Sony Xperia Z2 Photo Samples and First Impressions

Posted on March 31, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Photography 2 Comments

Sony_Xperia_Z2_SMA2141M_Scr

Here are the first photos I have taken with the Xperia Z2. This just came in a few hours ago and these are all taken in Superior Auto. None of these have been modified!

More photos here and I will keep adding! https://flic.kr/s/aHsjVXogrK

A few notes:

  • The Xperia Z2 supports the Tmobile AWS bands in 4G and LTE
  • There are some bugs that need to be worked out. For example, viewing photos after taking a photo pulls up the keyboard and pictures don’t rotate
  • MOST ANNOYING SO FAR – For some stupid reason, Exchange email requires a password instead of a PIN-code. WTF?! I heard this was an issue with KitKat on Xperia devices
  • The white version hides fingerprints on the back panel really well!
  • Auto brightness settings are unpredictable. Sometimes when viewing a picture, it gets dark in the photo app

Stay tuned for the full review!

Nexus 5 Quick Review

Posted on December 30, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 3 Comments

Nexus_5_Leaked_Press_Render_Google_Server_01

I’ve been jumping from device to device within the past few months and I finally stumbled on to a Nexus 5. To be honest I’ve never been a fan of vanilla Android and really didn’t care too much about Google’s Nexus line of smartphones. Earlier in December, I finally decided to take a chance on the Nexus 5 and just play around with it since I was pretty much dead set on using the Note 3. Fast forward to today, I’ve sold my Note 3, Xperia Z1 and now have the Nexus 5 as my main phone of choice.

Instead of going too far into detail about specs, benchmarks, and Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat since they have all been discussed to death on several review sites, I’m just going to do a quick write up… Continue reading→

Xperia Z1 Camera Performance After 14.2.A.0.290 Update (Android 4.3)

The Xperia Z1 Update Improves EVERYTHING… except for the camera

I was really excited about this update because there was a lot of talk that Sony would address the erratic and unpredictable camera in Superior Auto mode as mentioned in my review. I am well aware of how great the camera works in Manual Mode but this isn’t what it’s all about. Aside from the camera, the update improves just about everything about the phone and really enhances the user experience. Here are a few notes:

  • All the benefits of Android 4.3 and the smooth fast performance of “Project Butter” and built in TRIM support
  • Improved UI of Albums app
  • Improved Movie app, now with subtitle support
  • New Xperia Themes to download
  • Improved and slightly tweaked mail app which now supports push for all accounts
  • General UI Improvements
  • Bluetooth 4.0 Support
  • Unlocked bootloader now does not disable the camera! Continue reading→

Geek Life November

Christmas came pretty early for geeks everywhere with the release of the highly anticipated Xbox One and Playstation 4. Earlier in November, Apple launched the new iPad Air and the Retina iPad Mini just a few weeks after. If you’re a hardcore geek/gamer/nerd etc… it has been a hell of an expensive month. Not too long ago, Apple released the iPhone 5S, Samsung with the Note 3, Sony with the Xperia Z1, and now Google/LG with the new Nexus 5 running KitKat 4.4 (now 4.4.2 at the time of this writing)! I must say that it has also been an expensive 90 some days and trying to find the best mobile devices comes with hefty price tags. Let’s get on with November shall we?  Continue reading→

Sony Xperia Z1 Review

Posted on December 5, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 12 Comments

A contender for the best smartphone?

After reviewing the Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 I didn’t think there would be a phone that could top that, until the Sony Xperia Z1 caught my attention. You see, deep down inside I am always looking for the best of the best and in my mind, the Note 3 is the king of all smartphones at the moment. Seeing the specs of the Xperia Z1 in being powered by the same Snapdragon 800 processor on the Note 3, having a much more premium quality build, an Exmor RS 20-MegaPixel camera, and being water resistant of all that, this has just about everything going for it. Will this dethrone the Galaxy Note 3? Let’s find out!  Continue reading→
