Restaurant Review – The Nice Guy – Los Angeles, CA

Located about a block from the Beverly Center on La Cienega Blvd, this place was totally unexpected from the looks of the outside. The unique modern decor is something to be admired along with the trendy mood, people, and atmosphere. But I’m not one to care about those things especially when I walk into a place with an appetite.

Starting off with the maple glazed kale chips and kale salad, I was already sold. Not really a fan of kale and any of that healthy stuff but wow those two dishes were just bursting with flavor. Next round of appetizers we had was the mac and cheese, which had a really interesting twist with egg yolk right in the middle of the mac and cheese! We were wondering what it was that made it taste so good and Chef John-Carlos Kuramoto himself told us that’s what it was.
Next was the parmesan chicken wings. Add that with the marinara sauce and wow, you get  another great dish. Continue reading→

It’s Caturday!

Posted on August 23, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News 1 Comment

It’s been a long week and I am thankful for this weekend. Been busy with work and every time I want to go do a major article, something else comes up. There was one night where I couldn’t sleep so I created a website for my cat Lily at www.lilythecat.com hoping to promote my cat since we have so many photos of her. I can’t believe how easy it is to put up a website these days especially with Tumblr and WordPress. Way back in my day, we had to use Geocities or some other domain host and the quality was horrible! Anyway, off to enjoy the weekend!

The Geek’s Mobile Gear 2014

Working in running a region of six sales teams in the telecommunications industry involves lots of travel but at the same time it gives me the opportunity to utilize a lot of mobile tech which is what I love to play with anyway.

I like to say that the world is my office since I work just about everywhere – not just from a desk but from the floor, to a bench, in a car, on a plane, etc… and there’s no way in hell that I’m going to be able to carry my 27-inch iMac with me.  So here’s a look at my ever changing mobile gear – my home away from home! Dinner at Cafe Santorini! A Pasadena Gem!

Posted on August 10, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Food 1 Comment
This is one of the best Mediterranean restaurants I have been to. Having actually dined in the Mediterranean, none of the dishes have disappointed at Cafe Santorini. Located in a hidden alley with access to dining on the balcony, you’d think you’d be paying 5 star prices but this place is surprisingly affordable for the quality and atmosphere you get. So guys, if you want to impress your lady, take them here.

From the salad, to the Santorini pizza, kefka kebab, all the way down to the pear dessert were amazing. Feel like a good shrimp pasta? They’ve got that too. Our waiter was pleasant and the busboy was attentive to our refills and they packaged our leftovers.

Taiwan and Guam Vacation 2014 (Part Two)

On Part One of our Taiwan and Guam Vacation, we ended off at the falls in Shi-Fen. Here’s another look at the waterfalls. This was one of the situations where I had something better than an iPhone 5S to capture the beauty of this place, but as they say… the best camera is the one you have on you and thankfully the iPhone was no slouch.  Continue reading→

Geek Life – Taiwan and Guam Vacation 2014 (Part One)

Posted on May 21, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life, Photography 1 Comment

Karo and I finally took some time off out of the country and went to visit some friends and family in both Taiwan and Guam this February and March. We tried the make the most of out of two weeks but it is definitely not enough time to explore Taiwan and Guam… well Taiwan mostly. You can get through Guam in a day or two 😉

I was born in Guam and moved to Southern California till I was 17 so I was there for most of my life. Karo is born in Taiwan  so we decided to visit each other’s birthplace.

On this trip, I left the iPad Air and MacBook Air 13-inch, and digital camera back home and decided to try out the Surface Pro 2 for my computing needs and the iPhone 5S to take pictures with and to keep myself entertained on flights. It turns out I didn’t even use the Surface Pro 2 that much as it was sort of cumbersome using it as either a tablet or a laptop. I relied heavily on the iPhone 5S for everything else.  Continue reading→

WWDC 2013 Highlights

Apple’s WWDC clashes with the gaming industry’s E3 made it a tough choice on which event to participate in. To continue the tradition of me covering everything Apple, it was obvious that I would be the one to do the write up of the World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco! Whether you love or hate them, Apple has set the bar in the computer and mobile device industry with their line of iPads, iPhones, and MacBooks and the competition always watches closely on where Apple goes next. This year’s highly anticipated WWDC had high expectations and Apple has pretty much delivered for the most part along with a few surprises here and there. Here’s a quick round up of WWDC 2013…

Samsung Galaxy S4 First Impressions

Posted on May 12, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 1 Comment

samsung-galaxy-s4-xl

Hands on with Samsung’s hottest smartphone!

Note from editor: Please keep in mind that this is just my First Impressions and is not a FULL REVIEW. I know there is A LOT to cover on this feature packed phone so I want to give the Galaxy S4 as much a fair chance as possible. Please don’t flame me just yet!

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the most anticipated phones this year along with the HTC One and the upcoming iPhone 5S (or whatever the next iPhone is going to be) and is the follow up to the best selling Galaxy S3. Packed with a boatload of new features such as Air Gestures, infrared TV Remote, pedomoter, etc… on top of a more powerful 1.9Ghz Snapdragon Processor (or Octocore Exynos if you get the international model) 2GB RAM, and 13-megapixel camera just to name a few. The S4 does just about everything, but one the tough questions it must face is that does it do them well? I spent a few days with the Galaxy S4 and am going to give my initial impressions. It’s not possible to review this phone over the weekend since there are just so many things to cover over this feature freak of nature!

Geek Life March 14th to May 5th

Droid!

It’s been crazy over the past few months and I worked on quite a handful of reviews. In doing that, I’ve rotated through some notebooks, smartphones and other gadgets going from an iPhone 5, to a Note 2, back to an iPhone 5 and now I am rockin’ an HTC One 64GB Developer Edition! I’ve also gone through some notebooks and tablets too such as going from an iPad Mini to a Microsoft Surface Pro, an Asus Transformer, Razer Edge Gaming Tablet to a Retina iPad, and now I am back to the iPad Mini once again. And on the notebook side, I went from my MacBook Air 11″ to a Dell XPS 12 and now I’m loving the MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display! I like to play around with the latest and greatest and I probably have an addiction where I will never be satisfied with what I currently have. At this very moment, my trio of the MacBook Pro 13″ Retina, iPad Mini LTE, and my new HTC One will do for now. I still plan to keep the iPhone 5 because as my backup and “in-between” phones to use while I look for something better! Again, lots of tech and lots of food within these two months!
