Microsoft Surface Go First Impressions – great tablet if you use Edge

Posted on September 8, 2018 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, Reviews Leave a comment

Yeah that’s me looking at Reddit lol. I’m day 3 on the 8/128 surface go and so far have used it mainly as a laptop vs a tablet. I’m looking to see if this can replace my MacBook 12inch and 9.7 inch iPad Pro.

So far it’s been pretty good as a laptop. Sure it was laggy during the first few hours during updates but it’s performed pretty well on all the software I use for work which is Office 365 and Chrome.

Today I’ve finally decided to just use this as a tablet laying on the couch. Chrome runs like garbage in tablet mode. However, Edge runs very well. As well as Safari in the iPad except with much more versatility since the Surface Go runs on a fully functional operating system.

Still wish the Go had better hardware though and i would definitely pay more for 16GB RAM and a better CPU on this form factor. Excited to see what Microsoft will announce in October.

iPhone 6? iWatch? iOS 8? Apple’s highly anticipated event happening today!

Rumors of the iPhone 6 have started on the day that the iPhone 5S was released, perhaps even longer than that. Talks of a long awaited 4.7-inch screen have circulated the tech world with conceptual designs made by fans along with leaks from China all over the internet weeks before today’s event.

This year might be a little bit different. There has been talk, along with other leaks of a 5.5-inch phabley variant of the iPhone 6 rumored to be named the iPhone 6 Plus. The new iPhones, running iOS 6 would feature sapphire glass, a curvier back, sides, etc much like the iPod Touch and just as thin.

Apple might also catch up to the competition by finally implementing NFC on to their phones enable users to quick mobile payments which they have been working on for awhile.

The iPhone(s) aren’t going to be the only product that will be talked about today. Apple’s smartwatch known as the iWatch will also be unveiled today which is said the be the smart watches that will end all smart watches.

You can watch the event streamed live on Apple’s website or from your iOS device and Apple TV at 10AM PST / 1PM EST.

Working in running a region of six sales teams in the telecommunications industry involves lots of travel but at the same time it gives me the opportunity to utilize a lot of mobile tech which is what I love to play with anyway.

I like to say that the world is my office since I work just about everywhere – not just from a desk but from the floor, to a bench, in a car, on a plane, etc… and there’s no way in hell that I’m going to be able to carry my 27-inch iMac with me.  So here’s a look at my ever changing mobile gear – my home away from home! MacBook HardCase by Waterfield Designs

Posted on July 23, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Workspaces 1 Comment

I don’t normally get excited about getting laptop bags but I was pretty stoked about the MacBook HardCaseby Waterfield Designs.

You see, for at least 5 years I carried a variety of laptops in this old Targus case that went with me just about everywhere in the world.

It was a pretty big part of my mobile life but time has definitely taken a toll on it.

I did my research, saved some money and then went for the MacBook Hardcase by Waterfield Designs because people have often praised them for the quality of their products and customer service. It just came in today! Here’s a look at it!

So far I love it. It has room for all the essentials aside from the laptop such as my mobile hotspot, iPad, pens, mouse, power adaptor, etc. Great design, very lightweight and this thing just reeks of excellent quality.

Definitely a nice upgrade from the old Targus bag!

Pros:

  • Very well designed, excellent quality made in the USA
  • Lots of Room for accessories, plugs, and  adaptors without additional thickness
  • Lifetime Warranty

Cons:

  • Really snug and tight fitting for MacBook Pro Retina 15
  • May be a little heavy for some

Overall Rating: 4.5/5

Quick Review – Sony SBH52 Smart Bluetooth Handset

The Smart Watch Alternative

I was in the researching the Smartwatch to go with my Xperia Z1 and I stumbled across this on Sony’s website. They had this really great commercial that showed the versatility of the device such and one of the features that caught my attention was that you can hold it to yourr ear and talk through it as if it was a “mini phone.”

So like an impulsive fool, I went and found one on eBay for $99 which was a great price since other sites sold this for $129 and higher! Was this impulsive buy worth it? Or is this another piece of redundant technology? Let’s find out!

Electronic Apps For Sports Fans

Posted on August 12, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News 1 Comment

Football fan with ball and trumpet

We hear a lot of news these days about how different gadgets and electronic apps are helping with various aspects of life: entertainment, organization, general utility, and on a larger scale school and business. But what about sports? The fact is, there are electronic apps and services geared toward just about every hobby and method of entertainment available, and the same is true with regard to sports fans. Here’s a look at a few apps no sports fan should be without .

ESPN ScoreCenter

Tired of checking Safari or Chrome for scores and basic information on your favorite teams? ESPN ScoreCenter entirely eliminates the need to do so. Basically, it’s actually a very simple app that brings ESPN news, scores and updates to your mobile device for the quick access and constant contact you crave. You can also set alerts to notify you when games are starting, when scores change, etc.

Yahoo! Fantasy Sports – Football

There are of course apps and online services for fantasy play in different sports, but football remains the most popular, and most heavily utilized. Particularly with the NFL season just around the corner, this app is a must-have! It allows you to check your league lobby, drop and add players, conduct trades, set your roster and check your scores, all on a single app.

Betfair Everywhere

This betting app from BetFair is a convenient tool for anyone who likes to wager on favorite sports. Basically, it puts your sports book in your pocket, allowing you to view and compare odds with ease. WIth this app installed you can also place bets through your mobile devices, and of course track how your bets are doing.

WatchESPN

It’s ESPN again, but this app is actually designed to provide live viewing for games, as well as highlights and recordings of games that have already happened. The app is free, but to actually view live content, you’ll have to sign in through your cable provider. So long as your home cable provider is compatible with the WatchESPN app (of course, most major networks are), you’ll be able to watch live content from your phone or tablet.

MLB At Bat

It’s summer, and that means a good MLB app is well worth mentioning. This app gives you awesome access to your favorite MLB teams for a very affordable monthly subscription. You can receive box offices, scores and headlines, and even radio for live games for just $2.99 a month (or a one time fee of $9.99 that buys the service for the whole year).

Apple’s WWDC clashes with the gaming industry’s E3 made it a tough choice on which event to participate in. To continue the tradition of me covering everything Apple, it was obvious that I would be the one to do the write up of the World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco! Whether you love or hate them, Apple has set the bar in the computer and mobile device industry with their line of iPads, iPhones, and MacBooks and the competition always watches closely on where Apple goes next. This year’s highly anticipated WWDC had high expectations and Apple has pretty much delivered for the most part along with a few surprises here and there. Here’s a quick round up of WWDC 2013…

I am sticking with the Note 2 – You can SEE why

Posted on March 26, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Apps, Gadgets, Geek Life 3 Comments

Note 2 vs iPhone 5 Screen

Sure there’s a ton of lengthy articles of why people have switched from iPhone to whatever Android device, I am going to skip that and show you my biggest reason. The Note 2’s screen is awesome. At first I thought it was overkill and silly carrying a device as large as the Note 2, but after getting used to the size of the phablet, going back to an S3 and even an iPhone 5 was almost unbearable. I have to hold the phone close to my face to read it on it! Also the Note 2 eliminated my need of having to carry around an iPad Mini which ironically helps me travel lighter. On the go, all I need is my MacBook Pro 13″ Retina and my Note 2 and I’m all set. No need to carry an extra tablet, charger, and screen cover. And if I need more battery life, I can just carry an extra battery!

Other great selling points on the Note 2 and most Android phones:

  • S-Pen is really handy when needing to jot down notes. There have been many situations where I had to quickly scribble some notes and it does a great job at that
  • Swiftkey is the best keyboard out there period. I love the Swiftkey Flow feature (swype) and how it predicts your typing patters. Great for people who use hashtags with Twitter and Instagram
  • Freedom to play just about any video format. AVI, MKV, MP4, Divx, Etc… Just load it onto the memory card and you’re ready to go. No required software needed
  • Oh yeah – the memory card! Load your music, movies, etc on it up to 64GB!
  • Customization – I can be in control of how my phone works and how the interface is laid out. I can set which default browser, video / music player, document reader I want to use!
  • Apps integrate with the OS. Unlike iOS which is limited to Twitter and Facebook, I can share to just about anything such as Instagram, Flickr, WhatsApp or whatever app I have. It’s really convenient

I still think the iPhone is great. I love the form factor and ease of one handed use, but the Note 2 better suits my needs! Hope Apple impresses with the next iPhone!

Nintendo Wii U First Impressions

Posted on November 18, 2012 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews Leave a comment

I’m going to be honest. I had no plans or desire of purchasing another game console after transitioning my focus to mobile devices and laptops years ago for entertainment. I read up on the Wii U here and there but wasn’t that interested until it hit me while going to Target early this morning to pick up some cleaning supplies for the house. I saw a line of people waiting outside and then that’s when I realized that today was the launch date of the Wii U. I figured this must have been fate so I joined the line as well and had the Wii U Deluxe with Zombie U and Super Mario Bros U in about 15 minutes.
