The Geek’s Mobile Gear 2014

Posted on August 14, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Workspaces Leave a comment

Working in running a region of six sales teams in the telecommunications industry involves lots of travel but at the same time it gives me the opportunity to utilize a lot of mobile tech which is what I love to play with anyway.

I like to say that the world is my office since I work just about everywhere – not just from a desk but from the floor, to a bench, in a car, on a plane, etc… and there’s no way in hell that I’m going to be able to carry my 27-inch iMac with me.  So here’s a look at my ever changing mobile gear – my home away from home! HTC One (M8) Quick Review

Posted on June 10, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 5 Comments

After reviewing the Sony Xperia Z2, I didn’t think there was an Android phone that could beat it especially with it’s excellent camera, performance, and battery life. The HTC One M8 had stirred quite a bit excitement during it’s initial announcement but the one thing that made me cringe was that it was still using the same 4MP “UltraPixel” camera. I’ve had the M7 before, loved it’s build quality, design and Sense interface but the inconsistent camera was unacceptable. This year’s HTC One M8 promises improvements all around, including the camera so after reviewing and using the Xperia Z2 for about a month, the bar has been set pretty high. To be fair to HTC, I’ve also spent a month with the M8 as my daily driver. Here’s a quick write up on it!  Continue reading→

HTC One M8 First Impressions

Posted on April 13, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Photography 1 Comment

My Phones as of 4-14-2014

Added an M8 to my collection. I really need therapy

Just took a few photos so far and the camera overall is pretty good. I wouldn’t say fantastic but not as bad as people would fear. Love the form factor and how fast and responsive the phone is. Button placement is somewhat awkward but I got used to it pretty quick. As some of you have said, that area where the HTC logo is at is a waste of space.

Here are the first photos I have taken with this phone:

Geek Life June to September 2013

Posted on October 6, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life 3 Comments

I haven’t logged onto this site in months! With a combination of just getting married, promoted at work, and playing with a lot of new gear within the past 90 days, my schedule has been pretty full! This is just one of those rare Sundays where I can finally sit down and write about whatever I want to. I hope I get more days like this!

On a hot summer day, the beach is one of the top two places for me to go. The other option is to stay indoors and watch anime 😉 Continue reading→

THISISMYWORKSPACE.COM Domain Acquired!

Posted on July 24, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life, Workspaces Leave a comment

Workspace 2-17-2013

I’ve been so busy as of late and haven’t had time to do any reviews or simple posts. Just recently, we (I) acquired THISISMYWORKSPACE.COM which is a domain name that I thought of when walking home after having a couple of Cajun Fish Tacos over at Wahoo’s. For years, The Geeks Office really never had any direction so it was really hard to figure out what I was going to do with this domain. For now I am going to keep things as they are but focus more on the workspaces. I enjoy looking at how people’s have theirs setup whether it be at work, at home, or even on the floor. It doesn’t really matter. I also just setup a Flickr group called This is My Workspace where you can go ahead and feel free to post your workspace and I will feature it on the site. Since we ended off in the previous edition of Geek Like, it sounded like I was very satisfied with my HTC One. Unfortunately knowing myself, I can never be satisfied with just one device. I have been rotating between the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4 frequently and am trying out the new iOS7 on the iPhone 5. Just right after I had my HTC One for a few days, I had to have it sent back because of a dead pixel on the screen and spent more time with the S4. At first it was frustrating to use because of all the bloat and lag but after flashing the GoldenEye ROM which includes several speed tweaks, bloatware removal and Apps2SD support, the Galaxy S4 is now where I want it to be. After receiving my replacement HTC One after three weeks (backordered because it was out of stock), I discovered the Android Revolution ROM which makes the HTC One even better and includes Android 4.2.2. Both phones are now at what I believe their best potential and it is very hard to decide which of the two is better. I like the S4 because it is very  thin and light and has expandable memory and battery along with solid performance. I like the HTC One because it takes great low light photos, very sharp screen, and great out of the box performance without any tweaking required. Then there’s the iOS7… as it is right now I hate it. Design looks cheesey and it’s basically trying to play catch up with Android and Windows Mobile 8 by implementing a lot of characteristics of its competitors including WebOS. There’s still no updated keyboard and widget support and it definitely isn’t the upgrade we were all hoping for. That’s an entirely separate topic in itself so lets get on with our Geek Life… Continue reading→

Samsung Galaxy S4 First Impressions

Posted on May 12, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 1 Comment

samsung-galaxy-s4-xl

Hands on with Samsung’s hottest smartphone!

Note from editor: Please keep in mind that this is just my First Impressions and is not a FULL REVIEW. I know there is A LOT to cover on this feature packed phone so I want to give the Galaxy S4 as much a fair chance as possible. Please don’t flame me just yet!

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the most anticipated phones this year along with the HTC One and the upcoming iPhone 5S (or whatever the next iPhone is going to be) and is the follow up to the best selling Galaxy S3. Packed with a boatload of new features such as Air Gestures, infrared TV Remote, pedomoter, etc… on top of a more powerful 1.9Ghz Snapdragon Processor (or Octocore Exynos if you get the international model) 2GB RAM, and 13-megapixel camera just to name a few. The S4 does just about everything, but one the tough questions it must face is that does it do them well? I spent a few days with the Galaxy S4 and am going to give my initial impressions. It’s not possible to review this phone over the weekend since there are just so many things to cover over this feature freak of nature!

Droid!

It’s been crazy over the past few months and I worked on quite a handful of reviews. In doing that, I’ve rotated through some notebooks, smartphones and other gadgets going from an iPhone 5, to a Note 2, back to an iPhone 5 and now I am rockin’ an HTC One 64GB Developer Edition! I’ve also gone through some notebooks and tablets too such as going from an iPad Mini to a Microsoft Surface Pro, an Asus Transformer, Razer Edge Gaming Tablet to a Retina iPad, and now I am back to the iPad Mini once again. And on the notebook side, I went from my MacBook Air 11″ to a Dell XPS 12 and now I’m loving the MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display! I like to play around with the latest and greatest and I probably have an addiction where I will never be satisfied with what I currently have. At this very moment, my trio of the MacBook Pro 13″ Retina, iPad Mini LTE, and my new HTC One will do for now. I still plan to keep the iPhone 5 because as my backup and “in-between” phones to use while I look for something better! Again, lots of tech and lots of food within these two months! Geek Life – The Geek in July 1st to July 14th

Posted on July 14, 2012 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Food, Gadgets, Geek Life, Photography, Workspaces 1 Comment

Celebrating July 4th in -4F Weather in Los Angeles! I guess the heat caused Yahoo’s computers to freak out

Quite a few highlights in the first few weeks of July starting from Independence Day, Anime Expo, and the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3 on the American LTE networks. Of course there were other things happening in between as well such as work, food, and life in general! I was also testing the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S3 to compare how it stands up to the best phone of 2011. So far I have been embracing Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich while waiting on Apple’s next generation iPhone. So far there hasn’t been anything that impressive of iOS6 and I am more excited about Android’s JellyBean. Continue reading→

HTC One X vs Samsung Galaxy S3 vs IPhone 4S Comparison

Posted on July 7, 2012 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 3 Comments

I’ve been testing both the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S3 and have been comparing both along with the iPhone 4S. iPhone is still better in quality and variety of apps and is a much better email device than any Android phone for Microsoft Exchange which I depend heavily on for work. Gmail of course works best on the Android but I’m fine with getting my Gmail using the iPhone’s Mail app. Also, since I’m a Mac user (also have the iPad and a MacBook Air 2012), iPhone integrates nicely with the whole eco-system with iMessage, Photo Stream, and iCloud. I did however find excellent alternatives to these services for Android such as Drop Box for Photo Syncing which is much better than Photo Stream because I can access the data without having to have any software installed to access my data by using any web browser. And also Air Droid which allows me to send text messages, access photos and contacts from my phone with any web browser.

The HTC One X has a better screen than iPhone 4S and Samsung S3. Build quality on the One X is superior to the Galaxy and is at the level of the iPhone 4S. The Galaxy S3 feels like a cheap plastic phone. Unfortunately the HTC One X doesn’t have an MicroSD card slot for memory expandability and the camera produces mediocre photos.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 however wins in having the best camera of the three and having that MicroSD slot comes in really handy. Although the screen quality isn’t as great as the iPhone’s and the HTC One X, it’s not as bad as I or any other reviewer makes it sound, AMOLED displays can still hang with the big boys.
