Samsung Galaxy S4 First Impressions

Hands on with Samsung’s hottest smartphone!

Note from editor: Please keep in mind that this is just my First Impressions and is not a FULL REVIEW. I know there is A LOT to cover on this feature packed phone so I want to give the Galaxy S4 as much a fair chance as possible. Please don’t flame me just yet!

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the most anticipated phones this year along with the HTC One and the upcoming iPhone 5S (or whatever the next iPhone is going to be) and is the follow up to the best selling Galaxy S3. Packed with a boatload of new features such as Air Gestures, infrared TV Remote, pedomoter, etc… on top of a more powerful 1.9Ghz Snapdragon Processor (or Octocore Exynos if you get the international model) 2GB RAM, and 13-megapixel camera just to name a few. The S4 does just about everything, but one the tough questions it must face is that does it do them well? I spent a few days with the Galaxy S4 and am going to give my initial impressions. It’s not possible to review this phone over the weekend since there are just so many things to cover over this feature freak of nature!

About One Week with the Galaxy Note 2

Six days on the Note 2 since switching from iPhone 5. Totally got over iMessage in about two days. It’s buggy, slow and unreliable anyway. Am loving the big screen but had to sacrifice the ease of one handed functionality with the iPhone which was more comfortable to hold. I figured that being able to READ the screen is more important anyway.

I have started to discover some really awesome apps when started to completely break away from the iPhone. For instance, I am really starting to appreciate Evernote more instead of relying on Apple’s default Notes app. And OMG, Astrid is an amazing Task/To-Do list program which smokes Reminders. As for playing music, I’ve always been a fan of Google Play which is years ahead of Apple’s Music Match. And finally, for piece of mind which heaven forbid I lose my phone or it gets stolen, Cerberus which has just about every feature the most paranoid person wants such as taking pictures of someone who inputs an incorrect passcode on your phone and tracking down their location, etc.

The Note 2 / Galaxy S3 takes really great closeup shots which is good for food photos! iPhone 5 on the other hand is better for landscape and low light shots but both cameras are pretty darn close in terms of overall quality. One of the things that I do miss is being able to use the volume button to take pictures and the shape of the iPhone 5 is perfect to use as an actual camera.

Both are really great devices but it really depends what you need out of your portable device. If you want a simple phone to send emails, text messages, take pictures and post on Facebook, the iPhone is great. Now if you want a smartphone that does EVERYTHING else and need the screen real estate for tasks that are suited to you – the Note 2 is an excellent solution. There’s of course always the option of getting the Galaxy S3 which is sort of in between the two, but if you were to go big, you might as well get the best 😉

My iPhone 5 and iPad have both been collecting dust for almost a week.

Galaxy Note II Review

Posted on December 10, 2012 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews 2 Comments

When Samsung first launched the original massive Galaxy Note last year which sported a 5.3-inch screen, my first question was “What the hell were they thinking?!” It was too large for a smartphone and too small for a tablet so it didn’t fall into any of those categories. Adding more to this already taboo product was that Samsung highly promoted the S-Pen which was the stylus for the device which went away as soon Steve Jobs claimed, “if you see a stylus, they blew it.”

Despite the Note’s enormous size, the phablet gained a huge fan base of users who found the phone to be very practical as it effectively eliminated the need for having to carry around a phone and a tablet. The S-Pen was actually one of the Note’s greatest selling points as Samsung lead a successful marketing campaign that sold millions of units to artists, tech enthusiasts, and road warriors alike.

The Galaxy Note II has gone through somewhat of a redesign and an upgrade with more powerful hardware. The Note II closely resembles the Galaxy S3 and now sports a quad-core Exynos processor, double the RAM, an even LARGER display and an updated S-Pen with more functions. Is this enough to replace your smart phone and your tablet? Let’s find out!

What’s in a Geek’s Bag?

Posted on August 21, 2012 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, Workspaces 1 Comment

Being on the road, it’s important to take the right things for the right situations. What’s equally important is the bag that you have as well. I’ve gone through different types of bags such as Targus, Tumi, Ogio, Kenneth Cole, etc but the bag that combines style, practicality, and durability for me is STM. Of course everyone is different and has different needs but their bags have worked well for me over the years and I am a frequent traveler.

Galaxy S3 playing Metal Slug 2 while hooked up to the TV with PS3 controller! Ever see an iPhone do that? NO!

Quite a few activities within these two weeks leaving me little time to update this site. I know I say that every time but it’s true! I went out for a hike in Burbank, CA, went to the Dodgers game in a VIP suite for work, and of course had great food as always. I did get an HDMI cable for the Galaxy S3 to run emulators off of it and onto the plasma TV while having it paired to a PS3 controller! Continue reading→
