Canoe House in South Pasadena, CA – Killer Hawaiian Fried Rice!

Sorry for the lack of updates! I’ve been really busy for the past few weeks and have been working nonstop right after finishing the iPhone 6 Review. Still trying to get a hold of the 6 Plus but with the new iPads on the horizon, I’m debating if getting another iPhone is still worth it. If I were to go iPad, I would most likely go for the next generation Retina Mini but there really isn’t that much left to upgrade on such a stellar device. It seems like the tablet space will plateau in anything revolutionary for the next few years as smartphones continue to advance. There’s also the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 which will be out in the US later this week and also a rumored upcoming Nexus 6 announcement not too far away as well so there’s a lot of exciting stuff on the way. Just wish there were more hours in the day. Right now I’m working on eventually posting up my review on the Pebble Steel, which IMO is currently the best smart watch out right now, compared to the disappointments of Samsung’s Gear and Google’s Android Wear watches.

Anyway, let’s talk about Canoe House in South Pasadena. This is my second time going there and so far have not been disappointed. From the look of the outside and even the name and tagline of the restaurant, I would have never known it was Hawaiian cuisine. I mean WTF does “Canoe House – Hand Crafted Foods” tell you? Absolutely nothing! So after going and having the Hawaiian Fried rice, which is basically a hibachi fried rice with Portuguese sausage, I came back for more. If you notice in the background of the photo, there are also some pancakes…

These Hawaiian pancakes are awesome. The coconut syrup with macadamia nuts are just out of this world. I totally recommend getting a side of those too if you are in the area.

Dinner at Cafe Santorini! A Pasadena Gem!

Posted on August 10, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Food 1 Comment
This is one of the best Mediterranean restaurants I have been to. Having actually dined in the Mediterranean, none of the dishes have disappointed at Cafe Santorini. Located in a hidden alley with access to dining on the balcony, you’d think you’d be paying 5 star prices but this place is surprisingly affordable for the quality and atmosphere you get. So guys, if you want to impress your lady, take them here.

From the salad, to the Santorini pizza, kefka kebab, all the way down to the pear dessert were amazing. Feel like a good shrimp pasta? They’ve got that too. Our waiter was pleasant and the busboy was attentive to our refills and they packaged our leftovers.

Parkway Grill in Pasadena, CA

Posted on August 9, 2014 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Food 1 Comment

Had dinner at Parkway Grill in Pasadena! All of this came out to $140 before tip but a meal like this once in awhile was very well worth it. We had the lobster crepe for appetizer, braised ribs and roast duck as the main course, and the bread pudding for dessert. Each dish was excellent and the service was fantastic!

It’s been an eventful October and I’m surprised that I actually have time to sit down and put this post together. Lots of new gear this month not including the iPhone 5s I barely picked up in late September such as the new MacBook Air 2013, a police radar detector, Canon S110, and the iPad Air on November 1st (review coming soon!). We also went hiking twice in October thanks to the nice weather change in Southern California where it’s not as scorching hot as it was during the summertime!  Continue reading→

Geek Life June to September 2013

Posted on October 6, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life 3 Comments

I haven’t logged onto this site in months! With a combination of just getting married, promoted at work, and playing with a lot of new gear within the past 90 days, my schedule has been pretty full! This is just one of those rare Sundays where I can finally sit down and write about whatever I want to. I hope I get more days like this!

On a hot summer day, the beach is one of the top two places for me to go. The other option is to stay indoors and watch anime 😉 Continue reading→

Since we ended off in the previous edition of Geek Like, it sounded like I was very satisfied with my HTC One. Unfortunately knowing myself, I can never be satisfied with just one device. I have been rotating between the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4 frequently and am trying out the new iOS7 on the iPhone 5. Just right after I had my HTC One for a few days, I had to have it sent back because of a dead pixel on the screen and spent more time with the S4. At first it was frustrating to use because of all the bloat and lag but after flashing the GoldenEye ROM which includes several speed tweaks, bloatware removal and Apps2SD support, the Galaxy S4 is now where I want it to be. After receiving my replacement HTC One after three weeks (backordered because it was out of stock), I discovered the Android Revolution ROM which makes the HTC One even better and includes Android 4.2.2. Both phones are now at what I believe their best potential and it is very hard to decide which of the two is better. I like the S4 because it is very  thin and light and has expandable memory and battery along with solid performance. I like the HTC One because it takes great low light photos, very sharp screen, and great out of the box performance without any tweaking required. Then there’s the iOS7… as it is right now I hate it. Design looks cheesey and it’s basically trying to play catch up with Android and Windows Mobile 8 by implementing a lot of characteristics of its competitors including WebOS. There’s still no updated keyboard and widget support and it definitely isn’t the upgrade we were all hoping for. That’s an entirely separate topic in itself so lets get on with our Geek Life… Continue reading→

Droid!

It’s been crazy over the past few months and I worked on quite a handful of reviews. In doing that, I’ve rotated through some notebooks, smartphones and other gadgets going from an iPhone 5, to a Note 2, back to an iPhone 5 and now I am rockin’ an HTC One 64GB Developer Edition! I’ve also gone through some notebooks and tablets too such as going from an iPad Mini to a Microsoft Surface Pro, an Asus Transformer, Razer Edge Gaming Tablet to a Retina iPad, and now I am back to the iPad Mini once again. And on the notebook side, I went from my MacBook Air 11″ to a Dell XPS 12 and now I’m loving the MacBook Pro 13″ with Retina Display! I like to play around with the latest and greatest and I probably have an addiction where I will never be satisfied with what I currently have. At this very moment, my trio of the MacBook Pro 13″ Retina, iPad Mini LTE, and my new HTC One will do for now. I still plan to keep the iPhone 5 because as my backup and “in-between” phones to use while I look for something better! Again, lots of tech and lots of food within these two months! PT Smartcase for Note II

I don’t get the chance to post as often as I want to these days but I do update my Flickr and Instagram pretty frequently so you can see a lot of my food porn on both of them. If you haven’t noticed already I’ve switched from using the iPhone 5 and am now proudly sporting a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 which better suits my needs because of the customization, larger screen, and expandable capabilities. Although the iPhone 5 is a nice phone, I like most people have gotten bored of it and tired of Apple’s restrictions on how I can use my phone. I love the fact that I can load as many songs and videos I want in several different formats and it’s great that I can pop in a 32GB MicroSD card and not worry about space. I like it so much that I’ve pretty much broken free of the Apple eco-system and eliminated the need for having an iPad Mini because it was redundant having both. The Note 2 is good enough to cover both the phone and the tablet for my uses. The eco-system thing is all hype anyway. I have no issues surviving without iMessage which can easily be substituted with apps like LINE or Facebook Chat. The people who matter to me have them already and if they don’t, they like me enough to install them! PhotoStream was an annoyance and uploading photos to Dropbox is a better solution. I could go on and on but people who gave Android a chance and love it have already said the same things over and over.

This session of Geek Life covers the usual food, tech, and I also went to Mardis Gras in New Orleans as well as take a cruise to the West Caribbean! Don’t worry, I wasn’t stranded on that Carnival Cruise! Continue reading→
