Posted on September 29, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, Reviews Leave a comment

My one month review of the ROG Asus Zephyrus G14. Short version? Buy it. Yeah it’s really that good. In the review I talk about benchmarks, gaming performance, battery life, portability, upgradeability, speakers, trackpad, keyboard, the built in mic, the lack of a built in webcam, etc and overall value.

[How to] Get iMessage to Work on Windows PC using Dell Mobile Connect on a non dell PC

Posted on August 3, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life, How To Leave a comment

Works pretty great. Not sure why Microsoft half assed their phone app for windows. Dell Mobile connect can be installed on any PC with an easy work around through the Microsoft App Store.

Here’s what I did:

1. Login to Windows App Store on your BROWSER, not the actual app store application on Windows.

2. Search Dell Mobile Connect

3. Click on the 3 dots located next to GET, and select add to cart.

4. Check out (it’s a free app, don’t worry)

5. After checking out and “purchasing,” open the Microsoft Store application on Windows.

6. Login if you haven’t logged in on the Microsoft Store app. Click the three dots on the top right hand corner, go to My Library and download Dell Mobile Connect.

7. Follow the instructions after you install it. It will also make you download the app onto your phone from the AppStore

8. After you install it, make sure you allow all the requested permission on your phone (again follow the instructions carefully), download the required Dell Mobile App drivers and restart.

9. Launch the app on your phone and Windows

10. Congratulate yourself

MacBook Pro 16 Inch with eGPU NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super vs Gaming Desktop NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super 2020

Posted on August 2, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life Leave a comment

A week after building my first PC in 20 years, I decided to benchmark my new gaming PC against my previous gaming setup… the MacBook Pro 16-inch with an eGPU + NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super.

In this video, I benchmarked both of them on Shadow of Tomb Raider, Call of Duty Warzone, Control, and 3D Mark Time Spy and Firestrike. I knew there was going to be a performance variance between the two setups but I did not expect that much of a performance hit when using the eGPU!

If you want to jump right into the benchmarks, it starts at 3:32 of the video. Or if you don’t feel like watching here are my results:

Tomb Raider

   Desktop – 70 FPS
   MacBook- 64 FPS

Modern Warfare Warzone

   Desktop – 85-95FPS
   MacBook – 55-65 FPS

Control (DirectX 12)

   Desktop -75-80 FPS
   MacBook – 35-40 FPS

3D Mark Time Spy

   Desktop 10220
   MacBook 7824

3D Mark Firestrike

   Desktop – 22422
   MacBook – 14062

[Video] Long Time Mac User’s First PC Build in 20 Years

This is my first PC Build in 20 years. This is a time lapse, of me building the PC. The whole process took about 3 hours, but if I could have completed it in probably less than 2 if I didn’t make idiot mistakes. And yes I did some cable management and I adjusted the orientation of the cooler after the build!

Working From Home Isn’t So Bad – My Mac and Windows Gaming Setup March 2020

Posted on March 20, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, Workspaces Leave a comment

With everything going, a lot of us are now required or highly encouraged to work from home. For me, it’s just another day as I’ve been remote working for over a decade. In fact, I love working from home because I can count on my own gear, have a large high resolution display and not work off a smaller cheap screen they have at most offices.

My Mac setup is also my PC setup too these days. I switch to Windows Bootcamp to run Windows Applications and plug in an eGPU with an NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super when I want to run some demanding games. Sure, it’s not the same as an actual dedicated gaming PC but being able to do all this off one device is awesome.

Stay safe, wash your hands and be sure to practice your social distancing!

You’re never too old to go back to school. You’re never too old to qualify for a scholarship either. I went back AND I was able to get a scholarship for the online accredited university I’m attending at Western Governors University.

Sterkmann Backpack Review and What’s in My Travel Bag

Posted on February 18, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life, Reviews Leave a comment

A review of the – Sterkmann Expandable Carry on Backpack for men Overnight Weekender for Travel & Business Waterproof Fits 15″ Laptop With Packing Cube, Shoe Pouch & Laundry Bag (20L-30L Capacity, 3 lbs) – yes it’s a mouthful but that was basically the product description on Amazon!

This is a really great travel backpack with excellent build quality and a much lower price than the Nomantic backpacks without sacrificing the quality.

Note: I was able to fit my Sony A7III with the Tamron 28-75 lens AND the Samyang 35mm lens attached to the camera with all the stuff that’s already in the backpack!

SMALL TIME YOUTUBER! Typical Saturday VLOG with no drones, boosted boards, or first class flying

Posted on February 15, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life Leave a comment

I am not Casey Neistat. I am not Logan or Jake Paul or those other awesome YouTubers! This video has no crazy wild adventures, skydiving, boosted boards… or even drones in this video. But hey, hats off and MEGA KUDOS to those guys!

This is my typical Saturday… and as I was editing it – a lot more uneventful than usual so I am going to warn you that it might get pretty boring. But hey, sometimes you just want to unwind and really not do much after a long week. Hope you enjoy some of this. A LIKE and Subscribe or even a comment will be greatly appreciated.

Three Minute Morning and First Drone Flight with DJI Mavic Mini

Posted on January 20, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life Leave a comment

This is the first video I’ve shot and edited in ages. Just picked up the DJI Mavic Mini and flew it for the first time. In face there are many things I haven’t done in awhile and flying a drone is also one of them. Last drone I had was a Phantom 4 which I sold sin 2017 before I moved to Austin. Hope to get back into editing videos again.

Non drone footage taken on Sony A7III with Tamron 28-75 lens.
