Super Quick Review and Thoughts of Shining Resonance Refrain on Nintendo Switch

Posted on July 25, 2018 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Games, Reviews Leave a comment

I beat this game in about 33 hours. Really cheesy typical anime and JRPG elements. Not that much character development except maybe for Yuma, Sonia and Kirika. Dialogue got pretty painful and sometimes dragged and I ended up skipping through a lot of the scenes (thankfully you can do that)!

Game play was fun at the beginning but man, battles started to get annoying and it was too easy even when you play in the more experienced modes. Just load your inventory up on ether, turn into the dragon and have everyone healing you and you will plow right through the game. Most challenging part though was when your party splits off for a brief period of time.

Game did have moments of lag and dips in frame rate on the Switch version, which I’m pretty sure the other versions don’t have.

I admit I enjoyed it and was brainless fun. Going to pick up Ys VIII next, but can’t decide if I should go Switch or PS4. Or I might got for Xenoblade Chronicles II.

Octopath Traveler for Nintendo Switch Released and Reviewed

Posted on July 15, 2018 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Games, Reviews Leave a comment

One of the most anticipated titles by Square Enix is now out in North America and the reviews have been very positive!

Eight travelers. Eight adventures. Eight roles to play in a new world brought to life by Square Enix. And now, you can enjoy all of them in the new demo. Step into the shoes and live the stories of each of the eight travelers and freely explore the world of Orsterra. Then, carry your choices and adventure into the main game with save data transfer.

Use each character’s special abilities in and out of battle. Break through enemy defenses by discovering and targeting weaknesses. Store Boost Points with each turn and then spend them at strategic times to strengthen abilities, chain attacks, or provide aid. Choose the path you wish to walk and discover what lies beyond the horizon.

IGN has scored it at 9.3 “Amazing”
Gamespot has scored it 8 out of 10 “Great”
Overall Metacritic score is 84

If you’re a fan of strategic turn based combat, JRPGs, and Square Enix games, this would definitely be worth checking out. Octopath Traveler is currently in my backlog of games along with Ys VIII, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Shining Resonance Refrain. Still waiting on Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger, and a Mario RPG Remake to be on the Switch! It is pretty exciting that the Nintendo Switch is getting more and more titles by the day though!

Tokyo Xanadu EX+ on PC and PS4 is Awesome

Posted on June 20, 2018 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Games, Geek Life Leave a comment

I really enjoyed playing Tokyo Xanadu EX+ by Aksys! It took me about two months to complete this game. If you are a fan of anime or JRPGs, totally get this. Here’s a quick rundown

  • Story: Town is under attack by “Greeds” which are like spirits or demons from another dimension. The Hero (Kou) witnesses a classmate gets caught in the middle of a classmate fighting one and realizes she wields special abilities like him too. They meet more people like them and form a super natural investigations group hunting them down throughout the game. Lots of typical anime stuff. Apparently all the girls have a thing for the hero. I don’t want to give too much away but it was the story that really drew me to the game.
  • Audio/Sound: Music is synthesized and simplistic. Can’t say too much about it. It’s not bad but won’t blow you away. Voice acting is in Japanese and it’s great if you’re a fan of anime.
  • Graphics: Like the audio, graphics won’t blow you away. Even though it’s on the PS4, it looks like a PS3 game and you definitely won’t need a 1080Ti graphics card to run this game on the PC
  • Game Play: Not too complex which is great. Battle system is like an Action RPG so you get to do some hacking and slashing, aerial moves, and other badass power moves. I don’t feel it gets too repetitive killing enemies. Overall the game isn’t that difficult and the puzzles are easy to solve. The game is big on developing relationships with other playable characters and some NPCs and you get rewarded on them.
  • Ending: There’s more than one ending to this game. Well you get the normal ending that makes you go WTF. BUT, you get to redo that ending scene after you beat the game and see the true ending, without having to start over (thank god). And once you complete that, there’s a little more to the story in the EX+ part of the game. You also unlock another mode called New+ if you want to play again

Pick it up here on Amazon!

Final Fantasy All the Bravest Review

Posted on February 17, 2013 by Louie Tran Posted in Apps, Daily News, Games, Reviews Leave a comment

ff-all-the-bravest1

If you’re a fan of RPGs, chances are you’re definitely a fan of Final Fantasy. The music, the story, and the characters from each game has touched the hearts of gamers for about two decades. Square Enix has ported a few titles over to the iOS platform, which have done quite well such as Final Fantasy I and II, and Final Fantasy Tactics.

So here we have Final Fantasy All the Bravest. You take all the final fantasy classes in all the classic games such as the dark mage, white mage, archers, dragoons and you put them against all the enemies in an Active (turn-based) Time Battle with up to 30 fighters on the screen. Sounds like an awesome concept right? Well that’s where the awesomeness stops.

Sony Playstation Vita Review

Posted on February 21, 2012 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Games, Reviews 6 Comments

In a world of iPhones and iTouches now dominating the mobile gaming market with 99 cent games, what sense does it make now in going out and spending $249+ on a portable console such as the newly released Playstation Vita? Why would anyone want to carry ANOTHER device just to play games while their smartphone will do just about everything else? The Nintendo 3DS so far has been a failure. Let’s see if the PSVITA has a place in people’s pockets for portable gaming… Continue reading→

Quick Review: Sonic CD for iOS

Posted on December 15, 2011 by Louie Tran Posted in Apps, Games, Reviews 1 Comment

Sega just released Sonic CD for iOS and after playing through Palm Tree Panic, I can safely say that this is an excellent port of one of the best Sonic games in the franchises. For those of you who don’t remember, this game came out on the Sega CD in 1993 and was the best game to ever come out on that short lived system. Just like the original, Sonic can go back in the past, present, and future on every level after hitting a flag and running at full speed (you unlock an achievement called 88mph, lol).

There are some very welcome additions to the game. For instance, you can choose between the US and Japanese Soundtracks and Tails is unlockable after completing the game for the first time! Sonic CD for iOS also retains the Full Motion Video animations that were on the Sega CD as well so you are not short sold on anything. If you need to stop and play the game later, you can will be saved and you can pick up where you started off at the beginning part of the level.

The App store description says that this is enhanced for Retina Displays but the graphics are not as smooth as they can be and it still looks like it’s optimized for the 3GS and below screens. It’s not a deal breaker at all but that is something that could be improved on. Other than that, the game runs incredibly smooth and the nostalgic experience is fantastic. I love having the ability to switch in between soundtracks because I like some of the US tracks better than the Japanese and visa versa. This is the number one game on my iPhone at the moment!

Overall Rating: 9.5/10

Pros:

  • Excellent Port from Sega CD Version
  • Including BOTH US and Japanese Soundtracks
  • Smooth and fast placed gameplay

Cons:

  • Graphics need to be tweaked a little more for Retina Display
Cons Graphics games ios iphone Japanese Soundtracks Smooth one sonic cd sonic cd review sonic the hedgehog US
