Posted on September 29, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, Reviews Leave a comment

My one month review of the ROG Asus Zephyrus G14. Short version? Buy it. Yeah it’s really that good. In the review I talk about benchmarks, gaming performance, battery life, portability, upgradeability, speakers, trackpad, keyboard, the built in mic, the lack of a built in webcam, etc and overall value.

First Impressions Review of Bose NC 700 vs Sony WH-10000XM4 Noise Cancelling Headphones

Posted on September 7, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews Leave a comment

I picked up the the Bose NC700s to compare against the Sony WH-1000XM4s right now and first impressions so far:

  • Call quality is definitely leagues ahead of the XM4s. They are as good as the AirPods Pro. Call quality on the XM4s are trash and crackle. Wtf this ain’t 2005
  • Sound quality overall on the NC700 is clearer. Bass is weak. The XM4s are noticeably louder and have more depth but sometimes muddied the sound with the overwhelming bass but at least there’s an equalizer to work with.
  • At first NC700 isn’t as comfortable as I thought it would be against the XM4. Earcups are better but that headband clamps harder than the XM4. after using it for an hour and a half I noticed no ear pain as I did with the Sony. XM4 hurts my ears after 30 minutes 🙉
  • ANC slightly better in the NC700 but the difference isn’t significant. They are both very good.
  • looks like Bose is taking their sweet ass time with the equalizer. Wtf is going on and how could they not have such a simple thing included on their app at the beginning for headphones at this price.
  • Did the workaround to install 1.5.1 and have the equalizer. Definitely improved by increasing bass but still doesn’t match the XM4s but it’s gotten a little closer. Bose needs to get on it to officially release a better version of this firmware. It’s been working great so far.
  • Multipoint pairing on the Bose NC700 has been working flawlessly for me. The XM4 was been wonky and glitchy AF. Simultaneous device toggle doesn’t work if Wifi on my iPhone is turned on. Sometimes it works ok, other times I have to re-pair the devices all over again. Hoping Sony fixes their software soon. Again, no issues with the Bose NC700.

Going to try these out for a week. Might just return both and see what Apple will announce or release later this month.

[How to] Get iMessage to Work on Windows PC using Dell Mobile Connect on a non dell PC

Posted on August 3, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Geek Life, How To Leave a comment

Works pretty great. Not sure why Microsoft half assed their phone app for windows. Dell Mobile connect can be installed on any PC with an easy work around through the Microsoft App Store.

Here’s what I did:

1. Login to Windows App Store on your BROWSER, not the actual app store application on Windows.

2. Search Dell Mobile Connect

3. Click on the 3 dots located next to GET, and select add to cart.

4. Check out (it’s a free app, don’t worry)

5. After checking out and “purchasing,” open the Microsoft Store application on Windows.

6. Login if you haven’t logged in on the Microsoft Store app. Click the three dots on the top right hand corner, go to My Library and download Dell Mobile Connect.

7. Follow the instructions after you install it. It will also make you download the app onto your phone from the AppStore

8. After you install it, make sure you allow all the requested permission on your phone (again follow the instructions carefully), download the required Dell Mobile App drivers and restart.

9. Launch the app on your phone and Windows

10. Congratulate yourself

MacBook Pro 16 Inch with eGPU NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super vs Gaming Desktop NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super 2020

Posted on August 2, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life Leave a comment

A week after building my first PC in 20 years, I decided to benchmark my new gaming PC against my previous gaming setup… the MacBook Pro 16-inch with an eGPU + NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super.

In this video, I benchmarked both of them on Shadow of Tomb Raider, Call of Duty Warzone, Control, and 3D Mark Time Spy and Firestrike. I knew there was going to be a performance variance between the two setups but I did not expect that much of a performance hit when using the eGPU!

If you want to jump right into the benchmarks, it starts at 3:32 of the video. Or if you don’t feel like watching here are my results:

Tomb Raider

   Desktop – 70 FPS
   MacBook- 64 FPS

Modern Warfare Warzone

   Desktop – 85-95FPS
   MacBook – 55-65 FPS

Control (DirectX 12)

   Desktop -75-80 FPS
   MacBook – 35-40 FPS

3D Mark Time Spy

   Desktop 10220
   MacBook 7824

3D Mark Firestrike

   Desktop – 22422
   MacBook – 14062

[Video] Long Time Mac User’s First PC Build in 20 Years

Posted on July 24, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Geek Life, How To, Workspaces Leave a comment

This is my first PC Build in 20 years. This is a time lapse, of me building the PC. The whole process took about 3 hours, but if I could have completed it in probably less than 2 if I didn’t make idiot mistakes. And yes I did some cable management and I adjusted the orientation of the cooler after the build!

[Video] 600 Subscribers – Life Update

Posted on July 12, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News Leave a comment

Just hit 600 subscribers so doing sort of VLOG and update on the state of things right now on a personal level. Actually using this as an excuse to test out the new camera light and the $200 wireless mic that I’ve only used once or twice.

I did commit earlier this year to doing at least 1 video at least once every week or two weeks but so many things have happened in the past 3 or 4 months where I couldn’t dedicate time to doing any videos. Got laid off, switched jobs, working on school, changed my plans for 2020, etc etc.

Thanks for watching and thanks for your continued support. Please be good to each other, stay safe, stay healthy, and let’s get through 2020 together.

[Video] Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro Review – Is it Worth It?

Posted on July 6, 2020 by Louie Tran Posted in Daily News, Gadgets, Reviews Leave a comment

My two month review of the Apple Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro 11-inch. Unfortunately, due to COVID, my business and personal travel plans have been canceled making it hard truly test how well it is to use away from home. I will however do my best to address if it’s worth the $300- $350 price tag, if it works well as a laptop replacement, and if it improves the overall experience of using your iPad as a computer.
